Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

CAPITAL GIRLS by Ella Monroe is the first book in a glitzy, fast-paced, fabulous new young adult series set against the backdrop of Washington, D.C. In it, we meet four young women, best friends forever, who must navigate life as the children of some of the most powerful people in the nation. With that life comes not only awesome vacations, beautiful clothes and A-list parties, but also scandal, heartache, danger and the ever-present paparazzi who seem to have a knack for catching them when they're up to something bad!

I love stories that are based from more than one character’s perspective. This story is about four different women who each have a story to tell! I absolutely love books like this. And to top it all off, these women are best friends! I cannot wait to dive into this story especially being that it is set in Washington D.C. and all of these women are probably trying to climb the political social ladder to success. It sounds like it’s going to be amazing! I’m so excited to see what everyone else is waiting for!

Book Review: Flirting In Italian

Author: Lauren Henderson
Publication Date: June 12, 2012
Publisher: Random House Children’s Books

Four girls. One magical, and possibly dangerous Italian summer. Family mysteries, ancient castles, long hot nights of dancing under the stars . . . and, of course, plenty of gorgeous Italian boys!

I love books that take place in other countries because I hope that after college I am able to travel all over the world. I love reading about the different cultures and languages; it all intrigues me! This cover made me hope for a hot, Italian fling with some dark skinned, brown-eyed foreign boy! I was hoping that the girl in the purple boots would be full of life and go after the prize, a.k.a: (a hot, Italian boy)! I also kept staring at the boy, even though all you can see of him are his legs and shoes. I was hoping for adventure from him and maybe even a few secrets. The colors on the front of the cover all coincide very nicely and the title alone is enough to draw anyone in. I mean who doesn’t want to “Flirt In Italian?”

Violet’s story starts off interesting enough. She lives in England with her mother and finds herself drawn to a painting that she finds placed within a local museum because the girl in the portrait looks just like her. She finds out that the painting originated in Italy and begs her mother to let her study there for what is like a retreat for young girls where they immerse themselves in the Italian culture and try to learn parts of the language. She tells her mother than she needs to spend the summer here in order to better her chances for getting into the absolute best academy, when really she is chasing the girl in the portrait and desires to find out if her roots are really Italian.

When Violet arrived in Italy I was still enthralled by the descriptions of all the Italian monuments and how Henderson incorporated much of the Italian language within the pages of this book. I loved how Violet reacted to her new surroundings, and I even loved the premise of the program that she was placed in and the beautiful villa where she resided. However, after this the story line fell pretty flat for me. I was expecting more mystery and a rapid paced adventure. Instead I got a cliché storyline.

Don’t get me wrong, not all parts of Violet’s story were unpleasant. I was still anxious to find out about the painting and why the girl looked so much like Violet. Wouldn’t anyone expect loads of mystery after reading that storyline? I did and I was so disappointed. Half the time that Violet is in Italy she is not even worried about the portrait and even trying to talk herself out of discovering why she looks so much like the beautiful woman in it. I wanted to yell at her through the pages to be more spontaneous and adventurous.

There were four other girls who were on this journey with Violet and they were: Kelly, Kendra, and Paige. The two American girls were Paige and Kendra, while Kelly and Violet were British. They shared some laughs and some interesting party filled nights together, but once again there was just not enough depth to these other girls. In my opinion, they should have been a bigger part of Violet’s story. None of them, except for Kelly occasionally, had anything relevant or awe inspiring to add to the dialogue. They were even shallow at times. All Paige and Kendra wanted to do was text on their phones and hang out by the pool; it was very unsatisfactory.

Violet’s love interest did catch my eye, simply because he did not fit the mold. He was not your average run of the mill, fall head over heels in love with the girl type guy. He made Violet wait and wonder. He played hard to get, which sometimes you need in order to get a great story. Everything cannot always fall right into place. Sadly, Luka had more depth and mystery to him than the mysterious painting did. Violet became so caught up in Luka that I felt like the entire story became shifted around him.

I am not saying that this is a horrible book and it should never be read by anyone. No, I am saying that if you love summer reads and want to feel like you are surrounded by foreign people in a beautiful countryside, then please do give this book a try. It was not a complete failure. There were certain parts of it that I really enjoyed and I wanted really so bad to love this book. A year from now I will probably not remember reading this book at all, but maybe for someone else it will prove to be an intoxicating read!

Book Review and Giveaway: Taste

Author: Kate Evangelista
Publication Date: April 30, 2012
Publisher: Crescent Moon Press

At Barinkoff Academy, there's only one rule: no students on campus after curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.

When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

This book was going to transport me to somewhere that I was going to fall madly in love with; I was sure of that. The colors on the front as well as the elegant black dress indicated to me that I was about to read a brilliantly written novel full of gothic detail and one that was sure to transport me to another world far more magical than my own. The title gave me a sense of the mythical and magical unknown. My first reaction was literally, “Ok, what kind of creatures am I up against this time? Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves, etc.?” I stared at the cover of this book until I began to daydream. After all, the beauty is inside the pages!

No matter what I say, my words can never do this book justice. From the first page until the last page I wanted more of Phoenix’s story. We are transported to a fantastical world along with Phoenix McKay as she begins her journey at a place called Barinkoff Academy. (I love that school name). At this school there is only one rule; do not be caught on campus after sunset! Of course, as I was hoping she would, Phoenix breaks this rule right away. She is then introduced to what are known as the “Night Students” and they are something so elegant and exotic that Phoenix is so determined to know everything about them.

Phoenix becomes caught up in the world of the Night Students because she breaks curfew night after night and finally she comes to know several of them, some which approve of her and others do not! The type of imagination that Kate Evangelista possesses is one that parallels J.K. Rowling. I was reading about the Night Students and as she begins to unravel their world, I was thinking, “How did she come up with all of this.” It’s brilliant! The Night Students are of magical descent and unfortunately for Phoenix, their pastime is “tasting” the flesh of humans.

Phoenix is a riveting and exhilarating character to read and follow. She is determined to uncover all the unknown secrets that the Night Students share even if it means she faces dire consequences. Her character is fearless. Even standing in the face of these Night Students and being threatened for her life never slows her down. She just throws out some snooty comment that readers cannot help to laugh at and usually ends up getting herself into even more trouble. She is so forward and abrasive, that I immediately made a strong connection with her.

The detail used in this book really reflects the beauty and effectiveness of Kate’s writing. From the Academy to the characters that are the Night Students, it was all remarkably described in avid and revealing detail. The school, I imagined to be incredibly gothic, from the stone walls to the large columns and all the way to the sweeping gardens, I was continually impressed with how far Evangelista took us and how much more in tune I was becoming with Phoenix’s surroundings. Even the people had an essence of mystery and I could picture them all within my mind. I love books like that! I love when I have enough detail to form a character’s appearance in my head!

For everyone’s information, this is how you write a love triangle! Wow!! It was neither sappy nor revolting, but just right. I was so pleased with the two characters that Kate wrote to be Phoenix’s love interests. They were so different, yet their love and admiration for Phoenix made them the same. They even semi-fought over her at one point, but at the end of the day they both connected over one thing; her protection! Demitri and Luka were both very masculine and chivalric and for awhile I could not choose a side. I eventually just left that up to Phoenix! Well done, Kate! The best love triangle that I have read all year.

This book has so many more details that I could share with you, but I absolutely do not want to give any of it away at all. I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of this book for yourself and take a journey with Phoenix, or just enter my giveaway below!! I am here to tell you that you will not be disappointed. Transport yourself to Barinkoff Academy and let the walls share their secrets with you. I am hoping and praying that there will be more stories to come from Phoenix, Luka, and Demitri! Exceptionally well written book with just enough gothic “taste” to send chills up your spine!

Kate Evangelista and I are going to help all my amazing readers start their Mondays off right! Kate offered to allow me to giveaway a free e-copy of her book, Taste! I was more than willing to accept and I am sure some of you guys are going to really enjoy this!
