Video Review: ReVamped and Author Interview (3)

Author: Ada Adams
Publication Date: February 20, 2012

A simple mission turned deadly.

Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

My first glance at this book led me to believe that I would be reading the same ole’ vampire tale that I feel like I have read a million times since Twilight! And that ladies and gentlemen, is why you should NEVER judge a book by its cover! I was ultimately mesmerized by the purple eyes and the beauty of the girl on the front cover; I knew I wanted to know her story. The color purple was just a reoccurring theme and it immediately caught my eye and kept my attention; I love when things are color coordinated!

Most books take me awhile to really get into. I have to have a feel for the characters and I even give them personality traits in my head. This book got me on the first page. I was immediately Team Dawn. I began reading about her surroundings and the first time she spoke I could tell that she was the type of girl that would never take anyone else’s junk, for lack of a better term. I read the first sentence and I immediately wanted in on her vampire world. Her attitude and perseverance made me want to be her best friend!

The thing that I think I loved most about this book was that it was so different from any other vampire book I have read in the past. I loved that Vampires and Humans could corporate together and not want to kill each other! It was a very realistic view for the reader. Ada writes how Vampires would function were they to live among us. I was like, “Wow, this is present day she is talking about and there are Vampires that drink the drinks we like and eat the foods we eat!” Dawn and her friends are coexisting with humans and it is, for the most part, a peaceful world.

As I mentioned before, I thought this book was going to be full of dark, sinister, and moody Vampires, but I was so mistaken! The language was full of humor and I constantly found myself laughing out loud. There were no dark and abandoned dungeons or creepy or eerie alley ways, but it was instead a bright and very domesticated world for the Vampires in this book. They had things like Blood Cola and Blood Bull. There was no devouring of humans and ravishing their blood, for a change! There is nothing wrong with the dark world of the Vampires that we are used to, but Adams gives you the same remarkable Vampires just with a little kick!

I am very proud to introduce to all my lovely readers the woman whom has spun such an invigorating tale…

Me: How did you come up with the idea for"ReVamping" Vampires?

Ada: We already have so many wonderful books about dark, gritty, dangerous, and attractive vampires. It’s no doubt that such books are very appealing to readers! However, I chose to write about a group of misfits who, at least at this point in time, don’t fit most of those criteria. I wanted them to be very “human” vampires, with very human fears and weaknesses. I thought that exploring how they may overcome these issues while also fighting a big threat would make for an interesting story. I’m really enjoying seeing the team grow and develop, and look forward to telling their stories in more detail over the course of the series.

Me: Ok, so you have to pick! Who is taking you on a first date; Sebastian or Ethan?

Ada: You’re putting me on the spot, aren’t you? :) It’s definitely a touch choice! Ethan is such a sweetheart, but I think I would have to say Sebastian. I don’t know what it is about us girls and mysterious, brooding guys, but they are just so irresistible. Please don’t let Dawn get wind of this!

Me: Was there any particular message that you wanted your readers to take away from this book?

Ada: I’m not big on “preachy” YA books, as I do believe that young adult readers are intelligent enough to figure out when the story is trying to force a certain moral on them. I think that YA books should be read for enjoyment and pleasure, so I tried to tailor the book in such a way. However, I do think that books can have positive messages within them. One message that is intertwined in the pages of “ReVamped” is that of friendship. No matter who were are, and how many superpowers we may have, we all need a friend we can trust and rely on.

Me: You are at a Masquerade Ball/Halloween Party; what do you dress up as?

Ada: This past Halloween I dressed up as “Little Red Riding Hood”. However, for some reason, no one guessed what I was! The entire night everyone kept calling me “Twilight”. Apparently, the black clothing and red cape reminded them of the Volturi instead of Little Red. (I’ll have to see if I can find a picture). However, for a masquerade ball, I would love to dress up in a beautiful 19th century gown!

Me: What are you working on now?

Ada: I’m currently working on “ReAwakened”, the second book in the “Angel Creek” series. It takes us on a more intimate journey into the characters’ lives. We find out a lot more about the misfits’ pasts, as well as Dawn’s relationship(s). Some new characters are also making an appearance in Angel Creek to stir up some trouble!
