Book Review: Eighth Grave After Dark

Eighth Grave After Dark (Charley Davidson, #8)Author: Darynda Jones
Publication Date: May 19, 2015
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Series: Charley Davidson # 8

With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

There was a dead tax attorney in my closet, sobbing uncontrollably into the hem of her blouse. She’d been there a few days now. It made getting dressed in the morning awkward.

“Okay, but as much as I love your undergarments, you’re going to need pants.”

“I changed my mind. I want a job where I get to carry a gun.”

Do yourself a huge favor and start reading the Charley Davidson series today. Darynda’s books never cease to amaze me; I cannot stand to be away from them once I pick one up and start reading. This series always promises snarky humor, sizzling romance, and some serious attitude from the Grim Reaper that I love best: Charley Davidson. If you have kept up with the series, then you know that Charley is finally settled, as in married, and pregnant with her first child. Quite a few of my questions were answered in this book and I was pleased with where Jones headed with the story. Mystery follows Charley everywhere she goes and readers always know that they are in for a wild goose chase wherever she is involved. This book does have less movement because of Charley’s circumstances; she is confined to one place. But, of course, Charley still finds a way to be right in the midst of all the action and adventure!

This book will give readers a clear idea of where the next book is headed, and I am just so excited that there will be a next book! The ending is not so much a cliffhanger like others have been, but is more of an open door that is transparent. I am hearing that the ninth book will not be releasing until next year, but I guess I will just have to learn to live with this for the time being. Charley and Reyes are sure not to disappoint no matter how long I have to wait. Charley’s witty banter and Cookie’s loyalty to Charley and Reyes’s love and adoration for Charley are all so endearing and what has kept me hooked to this series for all of this time. There is so much more that I could say about this series and so many things that I adore about it; treat yourself to a whole new world this year and embark on this crazy, wild ride with Charley Davidson!
